Wigan Hub

Wigan Hub | Initial Teacher Training  

Our Wigan hub offers high quality school-led teacher training within Wigan schools across the 5-11 and 11-16 years phases.

The partnership believe strongly in the value of welcoming Trainee Teachers and Early Career Teachers into the Wigan / North-West education community, so much so that we run our own regional hub as part of Kingsbridge Teacher Training. 

Our aim is to support trainee teacher development, in line with the Initial Teacher Training Early Career Framework (ITTECF), drawing on the best available evidence, to improve education outcomes and to make a bigger difference for the education of all our children and support new teachers at the start of their careers.

Our approach combines in-school experience, centre-based training and on-line tuition.  We work with and equip trainees with the skills to work in an array of schools, including those in challenging circumstances. These experiences will ensure that our trainees can teach high quality lessons and positively engage with pupils through their academic work as well as their pastoral experiences.

Train to Teach as a Primary School Teacher

Primary Programmes (5-11)

Our Wigan Primary Teacher Training Programme is full time and runs for one academic year that combines in-school experience, centre-based training and online tuition.

Placements are structured to offer training across the 5-11 age ranges with experience in two contrasting schools.

Core School Placement 

5-11 programme is within Early Years (Reception), Key Stage 1 – ages 5-7 (Years 1-2) and Key Stage 2 – ages 7-11 (Years 3-6)

Adjacent Age Range Enrichment

(5-11 age range)

You will undertake a main placement in a Key Stage 1 or 2 and a second placement in a contrasting Key Stage. This experience will complement the sessions on transition and ensure you fully understand the expectations, curricula, strategies and teaching arrangements in the age group immediately before and after those you are trained to teach.  


Train to Teach as a Secondary School Teacher

Secondary Programme (11-16)

Our Secondary Teacher Training Programme is full time and runs for one academic year that combines in-school experience, centre-based training and online tuition. Your training will include subject knowledge development sessions that have been designed by experts in each specific subjects.

Core School Placement 

You will undertake a main placement and a second placement in a contrasting school. This experience will complement the sessions on transition and ensure you fully understand the expectations, curricula, strategies and teaching arrangements in a range of secondary school settings. 


Additional Information about the programme

Placements during the year ordinarily operate as follows:
1) Main Placement - Sept to Christmas
2) Second Placement - Jan to Feb Half Term
3) Return to Main Placement - Feb Half Term to Graduation

Additional short-term intensive placements

In addition to the normal placements outlined above all our trainees engage in a range of additional short-term intensive school placements. Our intensive placement scheme provides additional opportunities for trainee teachers to benefit from highly focused practice of, and feedback on, essential components of the curriculum, to fully support trainees in the method and practice of teaching, especially in academic subject or theoretical concepts.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for all programmes leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with PGCert are £9,250.

Student Finance England: Tuition Fee Loan

If you are on our non-salaried postgraduate teacher training course, you’ll have to pay tuition fees.

Home and EEA students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. This is available through Student Finance England. You won’t have to pay the cost of tuition charges up front and you will only repay the loan once you are in full-time employment and earning above £21,000.

Student Finance England: Maintenance Loan for Living Costs

Home students in England may also be eligible for a maintenance loan to help towards accommodation and other living costs. EU students can’t apply for Maintenance Loans. The loan is paid directly into your bank account at the start of term. You have to pay the loan back. This is available through Student Finance England.


Teacher Apprenticeships 

Primary Programme (5-11) and Secondary Programme (11-16)

Similar to School Direct (salaried) programmes, Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships are a nationally-recognised, work-based route into teaching.

In addition to working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on successful completion of the course, apprentices will also complete an end point assessment (EPA) after the summer to consolidate learning from initial teacher training.

  • Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships are available for prospective primary and secondary school teachers.
  • You’ll need to be employed by a school while you learn on the job. This is likely to be in a school you’re already working at, or have an existing relationship with.
  • As Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships are new, there are currently only a limited number of vacancies. Keep a look out on the national apprenticeship service website for opportunities. If you’re already working as an unqualified teacher or teaching assistant, this route offers potential new opportunities for career progression, plus higher earning capacity, recognition, and status


The apprentice’s salary (+ on-costs) is the only cost which the school should incur. The training costs of the Teaching Apprenticeship will be funded directly from the apprenticeship levy account and is £9,000. Trainees wishing to train via this route require employment within a school.
